  • Child abuse refers to any intentional harm or mistreatment to a child under 18. It includes:

    • Physical abuse: Hitting, shaking, burning, or other physical harm.

    • Sexual abuse: Any sexual act with a child, including exploitation.

    • Emotional abuse: Verbal assaults, threats, rejection, or isolation that harm a child’s self-worth.

    • Neglect: Failure to provide basic needs like food, shelter, medical care, or supervision.

  • A CAC is a child-focused, safe space where children who may have experienced abuse can share their story in a supportive environment. CACs coordinate forensic interviews, medical exams, mental health services, and advocacy through a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach.

  • No. Families are not billed for forensic interviews or advocacy services. Medical exams may be covered by Medicaid or the investigating agency.
